KENINGAU: A man paid the price for attacking policemen with a parang when he was shot three times by the cops at Jalan Ansip here, yesterday.
The 32-year-old man, who was shot in the right shoulder, left buttock and left arm, is reported to be in stable condition. A policeman was also slashed on his left calf in the incident, which occurred at 5.30pm yesterday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Jawila said two policemen, conducting Ops Lejang to detect stolen vehicles, had spotted a Toyota Prado which they believed was stolen.

“The policemen proceeded to tail the vehicle. However, the driver of the Prado, realising he was being followed, turned aggressive and rammed his vehicle into the police patrol car,” he said.

The Prado went into a drain following the collision. When the policemen attempted to arrest the driver, he became violent and produced a parang, slashing one of the policemen.

“The other policeman then fired off three shots at the man to defend his colleague,” Ahmad Jawila told a press conference at the district police station here today.

The injured policeman reportedly sustained an eight-centimetre-long slash wound on his left calf.

“Initial investigations found that the Prado driven by the suspect was indeed a stolen vehicle. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder,” he added.
